Twenty years into Bollywood, Akshay still wins over his audience - week.manoramaonline.com

By Bidisha Ghosal

A quick background check on the top five superstars of Bollywood today: Shah Rukh Khan studied in prestigious Delhi schools and received the best training an aspiring actor could get. Aamir Khan and Salman Khan hail from film families and grew up breathing, eating and sleeping films. Amitabh Bachchan comes from an academically accomplished family and is lauded for his cultured baritone. And then you have Akshay Kumar, lesser known as Rajiv Hari Om Bhatia, who travelled like a nomad and worked as a cook, jewellery seller, small-time model and martial arts teacher.

Chandni Chowk to China just doesn’t cut it. Chandni Chowk to Mumbai, Bangkok, Dhaka, Kolkata and back to Delhi, then Mumbai and finally, Bollywood, is more like it. Life has given Akshay a different education altogether, and he entered the film industry as a man of the streets. At 16, Akshay did odd jobs when his father, a government employee and professional wrestler, suffered an injury. From then on, working to survive never ceased to be a priority. He bought kundan jewellery from Delhi to sell in Mumbai, taught martial arts and did modelling. “Look, I could sit here and make my childhood seem traumatic, but I have never made a bad situation seem so,” he emails in after an interrupted personal interview. “It was tough to start working at a young age to earn money for our house, but I made it honourable and enjoyable so as not to upset my parents. I had to sleep on the kitchen floor where I cooked in Bangkok, the dingiest of places. But I’d smile and enjoy the fact that I got to cook for sweet Thai women and children. There were days when they couldn’t afford my food, but I’d let them kiss me on the cheek instead.”

From getting Rs 5,000 for a modelling assignment to paying Rs 33 crore as advance tax in 2008, Akshay sure has come a long way. His show Fear Factor—Khatron Ke Khiladi on Colors reportedly fetched him Rs 1.75 crore per episode, his passion for martial arts seeing him through not only the early years of his work, but at the zenith of his career, too.

“I got into karate when I was perhaps eight years old, living in Mumbai,” he reminisces. “My neighbour’s son got a lot of female attention for learning it. That hooked me. It helped that my father supported my interest. At the time, Bruce Lee movies were the rage, so there was a lot of adulation for it.” Even now, Akshay does an hour of martial arts in the morning. “It is my life. It’s not the violent art people think it to be, but a calming and disciplining influence,” he says.

Calm must have come in handy, for it seemed that Akshay would not make it to the big league for the longest time. Not that he hadn’t churned out hits; Akshay had delivered more than enough in the 16 years before Namastey London forced the industry to acknowledge him as an actor to reckon with. Yet he seemed fated to remain on the fringes of Bollywood, his hits dismissed as front-bencher films that ought not to be credited with intelligence or respect. It took another three hits before the then reigning actors suddenly found him by their side with a monster of a blockbuster, Singh is Kinng.

The film shot Akshay straight to the top bracket. “It’s stupid, but the industry banks heavily on where you come from,” says producer-director Vipul Shah. “If you have the right surname, the industry is very quick to take you into its fold though you might be the worst actor in the world. If not, you have to deliver back-to-back hits for the longest time before they sit up and say, ‘okay yes, you’re good, too’. That happened to Akshay.”

The ethereal Katrina Kaif certainly had a strong part to play in fuelling Akshay’s career, lending his front-bencher movies a degree of class. “The two of them are the most wanted on-screen pair for the masses,” says Pranav Adarsh, editor, Trade Guide. “They have been unfailingly successful after their first film together; the masses can’t get enough.” While Akshay’s dream run ended in 2009 with 8/10 Tasveer, Adarsh states that “flops don’t matter anymore; he is still a brand unto himself”. And so Akshay got a higher price for the second run of Khatron Ke Khiladi and even more exciting advertisements with Thums Up.

Says Anand Singh, director, marketing, Coca-Cola India: “Akshay as a brand is all about masculine energy, thrill, daredevilry, with the right kind of attitude. Over the years, he has also evolved as a romantic family man, so while he engages in stunts, he retains his trustworthy element in the public eye. Perfect for Thums Up.” Akshay was ensconced in the action hero image right from his Khiladi movies, but with an edge. All heroes could land a punch or two, but Akshay could choreograph some graceful kicks.

Keshu Ramsay, the Khiladi filmmaker, remembers him as a “jovial, punctual professional. Many people change the minute they hit it big time, but Akshay is the same man that he was a decade ago.” This is almost the constant refrain of his directors. All 11 films Ramsay produced starred Akshay in the lead. Vipul Shah, who began his career with Akshay, cast him in five of his six films. He was the constant co-star of Suniel Shetty and Saif Ali Khan for a significant period. Priyadarshan’s Bollywood hits remain with Akshay alone.

When we meet in Film City on the sets of his forthcoming release with Priyadarshan, Khatta Meetha, Akshay is politeness personified. “The film is a satire on the road construction mafia that builds roads only to dig them up later,” he tells me. The scene has an elephant pulling a tractor with Akshay and Rajpal Yadav in it. “What happens is that the rope snaps,” says Akshay, beginning to guffaw. “And the tractor rolls backwards and crashes into that house” [pointing to a facade behind us] “that belongs to a municipal worker.” He dissolves into laughter.

That is the very essence of his career. Inane slapstick comedy, totally unapologetic and completely mass-oriented. After 20 years and 120 films in Bollywood, Akshay knows that being entertained is what drives the nation to theatres; unlike other superstars, he does not care about what critics deign to confer.

His films don’t create award-winning moments, but they certainly win over the audience. De Dana Dan, his last release of 2009, had loud acting, songs for no reason and a ludicrously bombastic end. But made at a cost of Rs 45 crore, the movie raked in Rs 70 crore at the box office and sold its satellite rights for Rs 8.5 crore. “There was approximately Rs 200 crore riding on Akshay in 2009, and even though most of his films did not fare well, collectively he broke even,” Adarsh points out. “Blue, made for Rs 75 crore, grossed Rs 92 crore at the box office, just about breaking even. Tasveer was undoubtedly a dud, but Kambakkht Ishq, with a net business of Rs 60 crore, was a success. Akshay is as bankable today as he was at the beginning of the year.”

India agrees. According to a recent CelebTrack survey, 80 per cent people want more of Akshay. That was taken care of when, upon asking his wife to unbutton his jeans at a fashion show, Akshay was charged with obscenity. The couple bore it well and the controversy died a natural death. Off-screen he is the devoted family man and takes his wife to parties and events. Twinkle is painfully media-shy, having left Bollywood for a successful career in interior design. Son Aarav is also protected from the paparazzi glare, though Akshay reveals with quiet pride that he has just won the first prize for high kicks at his martial arts lessons. It is for Aarav that our personal interview is cut short; Twinkle called to inform Akshay about an injury at school. With barely a change in his expression, Akshay makes a speedy exit. Shooting is off; family calls.

Akshay's water therapy
TNN, 31 January 2010, 12:00am IST -TOI

Akshay Kumar has flown to Germany for Hydrotherapy to cure his ailing back.

We told you a few days ago that Bollywood’s Khiladi has been nursing back ache for 14 years in a row because of lifting the WWE wrestler Undertaker. A certain section of the media had earlier suggested that the actor would be undergoing a surgery for the ailment. However, he had denied any such plans. Akki’s medical team advised him not to opt for surgery. Instead, they have asked him to try out the water therapy. So the Khiladi dropped everything in Mumbai and flew across to meet with the experts in Germany. He will return to the Patiala House schedule and shake a leg with the rest of the team by February 1.

Abhi and Baba...get Hangover!
SUBHASH K JHA , 31 January 2010, 12:00am IST -TOI

Akshay Kumar has chosen not to do the desi remake of Hangover.

Not because he’s got no dates, but because he no longer does films that endorse drunken and disorderly behaviour. Apparently after doing the foul-mouthed Kambakkht Ishq and seeing how audiences received it, Akshay has decided to do only clean comedies.

After his pal, producer Feroz Nadiadwala, purchased the rights of Tod Philips’s 2009 blockbuster, Akshay was reportedly keen on doing the remake. But his date diary was clogged in 2009. And he had to choose between Nadiadwala’s Hera Pheri 4 and Hangover, both to be directed by Anees Bazmi. He opted out of the latter because of his principles.

But Akshay’s loss is Sanjay Dutt and Abhishek Bachchan’s gain. They are happy to do do this raunchy boys’ film. Anees intends to make many changes in the script. And his Hangover is guaranteed to be radically different from the original. Poor Akki, he does not even drink, so he can’t drown the sorrow
or missing out on this one.

Akshay Kumar is not interested in desi ‘The Hangover’!
Updated on Monday, February 01, 2010, 19:42 IST -spicezee.zeenews.com

Mumbai: It seems that Akshay Kumar had a change of heart recently! Considered as one of the most bankable star by Indian filmmakers, the ‘Khiladi of Bollywood’ has refused to become a part of the desi remake of ‘The Hangover’, because he no longer feels like associating himself with disorderly behaviour and drinking!

The supposed change in his demeanor is being blamed on the audience, who out-rightly disliked him for a similar role in ‘Kambakkht Ishq’, and the actor has thereby said that he would do only clean comedies henceforth.

As a matter of fact - Akki was keen on being a part of the remake earlier, after good friend and producer Feroz Nadiadwala had purchased the rights of Tod Philips’s 2009 blockbuster. But because of date issues in 2009, Akki couldn’t contemplate the project the same year and now with his newfound principles, the actor does not want to feature in the remake.

In 2009, Akshay signed two films, Nadiadwala’s ‘Hera Pheri 4’ and ‘The Hangover’, both to be directed by Anees Bazmi, but the superstar has now opted out of the latter because of his insights.

Grapevine has it that Akshay’s loss has become Sanjay Dutt’s gain, as Nadiadwala has now roped in Sanjay and Abhishek for the cult comedy. And the duo is reportedly very happy to do this raunchy boys’ film! Anees intends to bring about various changes in the script and his version of ‘Hangover’ is said to be radically different from the original.

Akshay in Hamburg for a course in hydrotherapy :o

By: Upala KBR Date: 2010-02-04 Place: Mumbai - mid-day.com

The actor is in Hamburg, Germany with wife Twinkle for a two-day course in water therapy at a wellness centre there

On Tuesday night, Akshay Kumar and his wife Twinkle left for Germany to attend a course in hydrotherapy at a wellness center in Hamburg, a city that boasts of the best spas in water therapy.

Says a source close to the actor, "They've gone to Hamburg for a two-day hydrotherapy water treatment course. They decided to enroll after they read about how beneficial hydrotherapy is, as it doesn't put any strain on the bones. Akshay loves water -- he calls himself a hydro baby and whenever he's in Mumbai, Aarav and he spend time swimming at the 5-star hotel pool near his house."

Being in the pool
According to the source, "Akshay knows a bit about hydrotherapy but he wanted to increase his knowledge and take a proper course. Twinkle will undergo the training with him. The two-day course involves being in the pool for a couple of hours and learning various exercises. Akshay wants to learn exercises that are helpful for the spine, shoulders, back, knee, ankles and other joints and bones. It's one of the best form of natural exercises."

Before leaving on Tuesday night Akshay confirmed, "Hydrotherapy is amazing treatment for many injuries and especially the back and spine. You are put in an environment where the body is weightless and impact-free so you can rehabilitate your muscles without further stress or injury to the specific joint or muscle. The biggest sporting personalities go through rehab this way. I am intending to come back from Germany with a bigger bounce in my step than usual."

Hydro what?
Hydrotherapy, formerly called hydropathy, involves the use of water for pain-relief and treating
illness. It's the generic term for water therapies using jets, underwater massage, mineral baths, whirlpool bath, hot Roman pool, hot tub, jacuzzi, cold plunge and mineral bath. These treatments use physical water properties, such as temperature and pressure, for therapeutic purposes, to stimulate blood circulation and treat the symptoms of certain diseases. Hydrotherapy which involves submerging all or part of the body in water can involve several types of equipment: Full body immersion tanks and arm, hip, and leg whirlpool.

Aarav: At 9, a winner!

By: Upala KBR Date: 2010-02-05 Place: Mumbai - mid-day.com

Image

It's an award for a 'green' cause, no less!

Akshay Kumar's son Aarav has won an award for his involvement in the reduction of global warming at a tender age.

Mom, dad won't attend
While the actor may have taken over 20 years to get his first award, Aarav has won one at nine. The sad part is that his parents Akshay and Twinkle are both away in Germany for a hydro-therapy course and will be unable to attend. Aarav's grandmother Dimple will accompany him to the event.

The big miss
Normally, the actor wouldn't have missed his son's special moment for the world but Akshay, says the source, "tried to get the dates for his hydro-therapy treatment postponed but one gets the doctor's dates months earlier and there were no dates available after that, so Twinkle and he had to go. However, the actor picked out a suit for his son's big day before leaving for Hamburg."

Adds the source, "Normally, Akshay likes to keep Aarav away from public events but this is the first award his son has won and Akshay is glad it's for such a good cause. Akshay is very emotional that his son has won one at such an early age."

Evening out
Aarav will be awarded at the second edition of the Green Globe Foundation Awards organised by Wizcraft at a ceremony today during the inaugural evening of the Delhi Sustainable Development Summit at the Taj Palace, New Delhi. Aarav's award -- for Extraordinary Contribution by a Child -- is being given by a news channel.

Says a source close to Akshay, "Last year, while watching a TV programme called Greenathon, Aarav had asked his father to adopt a village without electricity and supply them with solar lanterns and other energy-saving devices. Aarav has been taking a personal interest in the village and checks on the stuff himself before it is sent. He saves electricity and water at home. When he saw Avatar with Akshay and saw trees being cut down, he tersely commented, 'These human beings are very bad.' "

Concludes the source, "The jury was impressed by the involvement of Aarav in global warming at such a young age and decided to award him."

What's the Green Globe Foundation Awards?
The Awards have been instituted as a salutation to the efforts of organisations and individuals fighting climate change through their work in environment preservation and regeneration. The winners have been decided by a jury panel of personalities from different walks of life. The panel constitutes, Mr M C Mehta, Mr Kartikeya Sarabhai, Mr Darryl D'Monte, Mr Bittu Sahgal, Ms Ranjana Saikia, Mr Abhijit Sinha and Ms Mili Majumdar. The jury has made their decisions, taking into consideration the innovation, social impact, cost implications and sustainability of the action, involved.

Preity aunty is Aarav's inspiration

Sharin Wader Butani, TNN, 6 February 2010, 12:00am IST - TOI.com

Image

He’s turning out to be a chip of the old block, all right. Akshay Kumar and Twinkle Khanna’s little boy Aarav is the youngest recipient of the Green Globe Foundation award which is given to people for their commitment to environment sustainability .

The Khiladi’s kid got this honour last night in Delhi for adopting a village without electricity and providing it with solar lanterns. He took the initiative last year after seeing his “Preity aunty” do the same on her birthday. Unfortunately, Akshay and Twinkle couldn’t be present to see their son receive this honour as they are in Germany undergoing a course in hydrotherapy. But proud grandmother Dimple Kapadia accompanied the boy. At the event, Dia Mirza read out a poem written by 3 Idiots scriptwriter Abhijat Joshi’s daughter. Hollywood actors Al Gore and Arnold Schwarzenegger along with Bollywood actor Abhishek Bachchan, too, spoke via satellite on the effects of global warming and how it can be reduced.

SCOOTING AROUND IN GOA

Yes, that’s what Akshay Kumar and wife Twinkle do when they go to their second home

SHRUTI PANDIT -epaper.timesofindia.com

Ascootie suddenly stops in front of me and the rider says, “Bas maage!” (Sit behind me) and I promptly jump on it. The rider zips around the bylanes of Anjuna to take me to his very warm and welcoming home hidden in trees. “This is my home!” says Bollywood’s khiladi Akshay Kumar.
As I get off the scooter I wonder to myself if it’s the stubble and sunglasses or his riding a scootie, touching each cow he passes or his down-to-earth attitude that sets him apart from the rest of the Bollywood crop who holiday so often in Goa? I decide to ask him this and also what Goa means to him. To the former question, Akshay simply confesses, “I really don’t know,” but there’s so much more to his later answer. Read on:

Home away from home

Akshay’s quaint home in Anjuna is his retreat. “I bought a home here because my wife (Twinkle) loves Goa. This is one place she is totally relaxed,” he reveals. “And this house is very close to our favourite breakfast joint here. That’s one of the things that went in favour of this house,” pitches in Twinkle.
“In fact,” Akshay admits, “All our favourite eating places are in the north. We have been coming here for last almost nine years now.”

Zooming around

The couple love the space they get I Goa. “Both of us just hire scooties and zip around without being hassled,” says Akshay. “What I like about the Goans is that they don’t crowd you. They just wish and then leave me to what I want to do quite peacefully.”
A self-confessed sports fanatic, Akshay, however, avoids water sports in Goa. “I wouldn’t like to spoil the fun for others by attracting crowds,” he sheepishly admits.

Watching the bats sip…

“The serenity here underlined by green surroundings makes it amazing. There are times when I relax in the patio at night and see bats from the neighbouring forest glide on to the pool for a sip of water. The sight is similar to the one at Mumbai or Heathrow airports. Just like aeroplanes, one bat glides in, takes a sip and glides out. The next follows only when the first one has flown away. I like watching nature in action like this. I hope and pray that nobody changes anything about Goa. It’s best being as laid back as it is right now.”

Image

AK’S FAMILY HOLIDAY FUNDA

His family is the world for Akshay. And summer holidays with them is one thing he looks forward always to. “In June, every year, I place the globe in front of my wife and son. They just have to put a finger on the place they want to visit and I take them there. They cooperate and tolerate my non-stop working for the rest of the year. They deserve more, but this is one thing I surely do for them. That’s their time and nobody is allowed to take it away.”

Akshay Kumar and Kajol Devgn are bonding big time

By: Hitlist Team Date: 2010-02-09 Place: Mumbai - mid-day.com

Image

A new dosti in B-Town -- between Akshay Kumar and Kajol Devgn -- is making quite a few heads turn.

Says a Juhu birdie, "Akshay and Kajol met during one of the events at their children's school (Akshay's son Aarav and Kajol's daughter Nysa go to the same school) and both the devoted parents bonded.

Image

It's a strange friendship. It's quite cute to see the bubbly Kajol chatting away merrily while a reserved Akshay smiles and nods." Wonder what Twinkle and Ajay Devgn (known to share uncomfortable vibes with Akki) think about their naya dostana?
