TOPSY TURVY
A roller-coaster ride with Akshay Kumar

"Unfortunately Water will have to be shot in India only. If we shoot it abroad it'll have to be titled Evian Water."

"There are no bad vibes between Shilpa Shetty and me despite our split. We're still friends."

"Jaanwar ran because it had Hindustani sentiments unlike most films today which are love stories made for NRIs."

"Twinkle Khanna is not responsible for my split with Shilpa. Though we tried hard, Shilpa and I couldn't make things work for us."

"I'm not the only guy who has had five broken affairs! So why is the media hell bent on maligning me."

He's done it again! It's splitsville for Akshay Kumar and Shilpa Shetty. An actress friend of Shilpa's who wishes to remain unnamed says that she's taken the split very badly. "It's sad. The last time Shilpa and I were together she seemed so happy with Akshay. The two of them spoke about everything from their impending marriage to their children."

Studio corridors are abuzz that Akshay and Shilpa split on account of his latest affaire de coeur, with his International Khiladi co-star, Twinkle Khanna. For those who came in late, there was much speculation that Akshay and Twinkle were a cozy twosome during the Canada outdoor of International Khiladi in September 1998.

Akshay who was then "engaged" to Shilpa Shetty had flatly denied the rumours. Ditto Twinkle. Needless to add, when International Khiladi proved to be a damp squib, both the press and public lost interest in the Kumar-Khanna love affair.

Akshay Kumar and Shilpa Shetty continued to be together. Reports of the `We're-very-much-in-love' couple's cosy candle-light dinners at the hi-fi Chinese restaurant, Sampan, the long mid- night drives to the outskirts of Mumbai city and the family get- togethers at Akshay's fancy duplex--where his family indulged their soon-to-be-bahu, filtered in.

But Akshay was beset with personal problems as well. In August 1999, tragedy truck. Akshay Kumar lost his father to cancer. The star was grief-stricken. On the fourth day after the tragedy, he joined Rekha and Manisha Koirala on a world concert. And was away for a good one month. Work, not love, provided him solace. Yet when he returned, all was not well. He was smarting from the unpleasant experience he underwent on the world tour. Apparently, the organisers had botched up the "Stars Of The Millennium" concert. He and Manisha Koirala had to play second fiddle to Rekha. And he had made his displeasure known in clear terms. Subsequently, the organisers tendered a letter of apology.

But today, on the sets of Keshu Ramsay's Khiladi Mera Naam, Akki magnanimously adds, "I was hurt. But there's no bad blood between Rekhaji and me. The organisers played dirty. And since they've apologised there's no point in raking up the past."

Flashbacking to his father's tragic death, the actor says, "My life has changed ever since. I'm now responsible for my family. I've to put my mother and my sister's interests before my own. Though I don't wish to talk about my grief in detail, I felt all alone when tragedy struck." Akshay continues, "All through the day I'm at work. But at night when I'm in bed, I stare at the ceiling and my father's face flashes before my eyes. I haven't got over his death. I'm not the only one in the world who has lost a parent. But there are times when I feel completely lost." He smiles sadly as he adds, "Funny how even stardom can't compensate for the loss of one's loved one." Yeah Akshay, you win some, you lose some.

A cause for joy also is the recently-released Jaanwar. The film has completed a 100-day run in many centres in Mumbai and up- North. AK beams, "As usual the film was panned by pseudo critics. Everyone tends to go gaga over love stories which are made for the NRIs. But the success of Jaanwar proves that there are centres in India, where Hindustani sentiments are appreciated."

Akshay also informs me that though Tanuja Chandra's Sangharsh was a dismal flop, he's been getting a lot of fanmail for his performance. "Earlier people only spoke of my dancing... and my action. Finally they're also taking me seriously as an actor." The actor is also gung-ho about Abbas Mustaan's Ajnabi, a whodunit.

Come September and he'll start work on Deepa Mehta's Water. He pooh-poohs talk about his being in Water only because Ajay Virmani, the film's financier, is his best buddy. "It's true that Virmani and the Canadian Government are financing Water," the actor informs. "But it's ridiculous to suggest that I landed the role only because of my friendship with Virmani. Deepa Mehta is no push over. She has me there because she believes I fit the bill." Akshay adds that it's a pity that there's been much brouhaha over Water. "I'm a Hindu," he says. "I won't do anything that goes against my religion. I've read the script twice over. Believe me, there's nothing in it to antagonise anyone. I'm sure even the Government of India knows this. But there are a handful of people who're trying to exploit an unfortunate situation."

Akshay adds, "Unfortunately we can't shoot Water any where else but in India. (Laughs) If we shoot it abroad, it'll become Evian Water."

Talk then veers to his current flame Twinkle Khanna. Is it true that he had recommended her heavily for Keshu Ramsay's Khiladi Mera Naam? "No way," he shrugs. "Mahima Chaudhary and Antra Mali are my heroines. I've never interfered with the casting of any of my films... I'll never do it."

Akshay states that he's kept away from the media for the last eight months because he's fed up of the constant specultion about his love life. "I'm not the only one who's had four or five broken affairs," he says. "But the media is hell-bent on maligning me. It's unfortunate that my relationships have not worked out. But I'm still better than several married stars who have affairs on the sly. I'm a bachelor and I'm not doing anything behind anyone's back."

He refutes all stories about Shilpa and he sharing bad vibes post their split. "We cared for one another. But unfortunately things didn't fall into place. But we're still friends. I'm shooting with her for Dhadkan in Switzerland. I'm certain that the atmosphere on the sets will be congenial. Shilpa's a sweet girl who comes from a good family. She's certainly not the type to make her private feelings public."

Turning crimson, Akshay insists that Twinkle Khanna is just a friend and is in no way responsible for his split with Shilpa. "Nothing could be further from the truth," the star insists. "Twinkle and I are good friends. That's it."

Of course.

'I'M NOT AFRAID OF COMMITMENT'

Akshay Kumar on his fantasies, fears and future

Image

As 11 cars go up in flames, a huge fire rages and smoke billows out. Thousands rush out of their highrise to watch the canning of the climax of Keshu Ramsay's Khiladi 420. Three cameras are trained on the superstar of action, Akshay Kumar, who leaps from one burning car to another. As he jumps to the ground unscathed, the unit claps and cheers. Looking pleased as punch, the hero returns to a chair on the roadside. There's a mad rush for autographs and photographs. When he's done with his duties, the star looks in my direction and adds, "Action is what gets my adrenalin pumping." No he has no fears of being hurt. "People love me... and my action sequences," he adds. Akshay has just returned from London where he performed some dare-devilry at the Indian International Film Awards. "I love doing stage shows," says the actor who has been bettering his act each time.

Image

"The audience thrives on thrills," he explains. "No one cheers a classical act any more. They want something that will take their breath away." So yours truly provides them their share of chills, thrills and frills. London was also special because Akshay Kumar got to hobnob with his idol, Jackie Chan. "I had eyes only for Jackie Chan that evening," Akshay smiles, adding, "After I made a speech on him, Jackie came forward and hugged me when I extended my arm for a handshake. It was the best moment of my life." Tease him that Shah Rukh Khan was spotted on television with the latest Hollywood craze, Angelina Jolie, and Akshay retorts, "I have idolised Jackie Chan since childhood. I sincerely hope I can do in a film with him some day." Akshay's life is action se bharpur in Mumbai too. Deepa Mehta's controversial film Water, in which he was to play the hero, has been shelved. But he's kicked about Suneel Darshan's Rishta in which Amitabh Bachchan plays his father. "The father-son relationship is something I cherish," says the actor, who recently lost his dad to cancer. "I'm going to give Rishta everything I have. And I'm so glad that Amitabh Bachchan, another actor I greatly admire, is playing my dad." Akshay also reveals that Amitabh Bachchan and he may be doing another film together. "It's to be directed by Vipul, a new boy, but the script is terrific. The moment Amitji heard the script, he said he wished to be part of the film. And I felt likewise." Akshay's next release will be Dhadkan, a love story.

Image

"It's a love triangle," he corrects. "It's a simple story based on the Ramayan in which the three principal characters are Ram, Seeta and Ravan." According to Akshay, Dharmesh Darshan is in his Raja Hindustani form and so Dhadkan should have enough promise at the box office. Rumours say he lost his cool at Dharmesh while shooting for the film. True? "I'm a well-bred guy. And I know better than to get into an argument with my director on the sets. I share a very cordial relationship with the Darshans, both Dharmesh and Suneel. Main unke ghar ka hero hoon. So where's the question of losing my cool at Dharmesh? I don't know where such ridiculous stories start." Okay, then is it true that he recommended the addition of Mahima Chaudhary to the cast of Dhadkan? "It was Dharmesh's idea to include Mahima Chaudhary. I had nothing to do with the decision," he explains patiently. "Mahima and I are doing Khiladi 420 and Dhadkan together. That's it. Please don't read any hidden messages in this. I'm sick and tired of rumours and rejoinders." Talking shop once again, Akshay adds, "I may not win the next Oscar for a performance but I can safely say that I'm a decent actor." Naming Elaan, Yeh Dillagi, Sangharsh, Jaanwar and Hera Pheri, Akshay Kumar adds that these are films where he turned in average performances because, "The director knew what I was capable of. I'm a director's actor."

Image

He also misses the fact that film-makers like Yash Chopra haven't bothered to provide him opportunities--in spite of cordial relations and that very special appearance in Dil To Pagal Hai. "I want to work with Yashji... I hope we do so soon." Hey, and what's with Sunil Shetty and him? The two blow hot and cold with one another constantly. "Sunil and I have no differences with one another now," he replies. "When we were younger, we were immature. Now our goal is to do good work. We're willing to work together." But didn't he back out of Rajiv Rai's Pyaar, Mohabbat, Ishq because he didn't want to be part of a crowd. "There were genuine date problems," clarifies Akshay. "I'm doing Raj Kumar Kohli's film which has Sunny Deol, Sunil and Aftab Shivdasani... Of course one of the reasons why I'm doing this project is because Raj Kohli is a relative... and I can't refuse him. But the Sunil-Akshay war is just a media thing. There are no bad vibes between us." Ask him to comment on Raveena Tandon's recent remark that Akshay Kumar is a decent guy... and he laughs heartily. "What do you want me to say? I've always said that I'm a decent guy and that Raveena and I will continue to remain friends inspite of our past." What is it that draws women to him? "Why don't you ask them?" he roars. "Besides my looks, I think women basically know that I'm a decent guy. That's perhaps why I've managed to stay friends with all my heroines." Tell me, are you afraid of commitment? "No I'm not afraid of commitment. But I'm not going to marry just yet. The trouble is that the media has time and again got me engaged and even married. That's upsetting. I've never made any statements about the status of my relationships. But the moment I'm spotted with someone, the media starts speculating.

Image

Discussing my engagement and marriage has become the national past-time. "I will marry when I'm ready to. And not when the media gets ready with a set of invitation cards," he snorts. Akshay flatly refuses to entertain any queries about Shilpa Shetty or Twinkle Khanna saying, "No personal queries this once please." So what else is exciting in his life right now? "I'm excited about flying to Toronto for the next one-and-a-half months," he grins. "I hate the Mumbai roads. Their condition is pathetic. Sometimes it takes three hours to reach a shooting spot. Believe me, I shave when I leave home in the morning and by the time I get to the location, I find a stubble on my cheeks. That's how long it takes to get to certain places." So it is true then that he plans to settle in Canada after marriage? "There you go again," he laughs. "I'm not getting married nor am I migrating to Canada. I love Bangkok too. But just because I like spending time in Canada or Bangkok, it doesn't I have plans to settle there. Mumbai is where the action is and my heart still beats for Mumbai," he grins. A little birdie whispers that his heart also beats for Twinkle Khanna... and that she will join him in Canada during his month- long stint. Watch this space for further action--live from Canada.

Don't look back

Akshay Kumar offers some sound advice

Image

Akshay has moved on in life. From being one of the wannabes to one of the most in-demand leading men in Mumbai. After three successes in a row, queues of producers and directors are waiting for him to greenlight their projects. But there's much malice in wonderland. The incessant tirade from a certain Ms Shetty has hurt and stupefied Akshay. After much persuasion he speaks on the subject, but just this once.

Things are really looking up for you. Are you happy with life?
Yeah. This has really been a terrific year for me. I went from Jaanwar to Hera Pheri to Dhadkan. Now I have Khiladi 420 coming up. I hope this Khiladi... works because I've given a lot of myself to it.

After the sunshine, there's bound to be some rain, right?
Doesn't that happen everywhere? Whether it's cinema or any other profession, every one is constantly trying to pull down the others. So why should I be an exception? It's perfectly natural for people to bring clouds into my sunshine.

But is it natural for an ex-girlfriend to call you "sick and disgusting"?
If she wants to say something, let her. I don't want to comment on any of the compliments that she has been paying me so generously. I have no clue why she's going on and on about me. Okay, so we broke up. Heartbreaks are a part of life. I think she should get on with her life and let me get on with mine.

Image

Image

She seems very worked up about the fact that you're seeing Twinkle Khanna.
I can't understand why. Shilpa and I have separated. She has made sure that the world knows it. Now that she has beaten her drums loud enough she should stop lashing out at me. I feel very sorry for the way she has been speaking. There's so much bitterness in her. Even I could speak about what happened between us. But that's not my style. I'll never hit out at people whom I was once close to. I'll say one thing, though. The Shilpa that I knew would never have spoken out like this. She's being provoked by people around her. I still maintain, Shilpa is a wonderful girl. I'll always think well of her. When I read what she has to say about me, I felt as if she was talking about someone else.

Why has your clothes designer, Rocky S., who's a close friend of Shilpa's, stopped desining your outfits?
He's quite busy with his other assignments for various artistes. Perhaps he wanted a change. I'm very happy for him in whatever he's doing.

Is your break-up with Shilpa responsible for his decision not to design for you anymore?
Why on earth would anyone let his professionalism be hampered by his personal friendships?

How has Khiladi 420 shaped up?
Khiladi 420 is inspired from a well-known Gujarati play, Mahapurush. My director, Neeraj Vora, is from theatre. My acting is therefore very basic, simple and controlled. I've never given this kind of performance before. I learnt that even a slight shift of the eyebrow can express a great deal. This has been an absolutely different experience for me. I have also performed one of the most daring stunts of my career.

Please tell me about it.
You know a lot of people are scared to sit inside an aircraft with their seatbelt on. Forget about the seatbelt. I'm shown hanging out of an aircraft strapped to safety only by a leather belt.

Speculations about your activities in Toronto while shooting for Khiladi 420 abound.
Forget about the speculations. They mean nothing. We all went to Toronto to work. I think we've done some really good-quality work. The results will be there with for everyone to see.

Image

Image

How many new films have you actually signed?
I have Suneel Darshan's Ek Rishta: The Bond Of Love with Amitji (Amitabh Bachchan) and Karisma Kapoor. Then I'm looking forward to Dharmesh Darshan's Han Deewana Hoon Main with Abhishek Bachchan and Karisma. I have always been very fond of Abhishek. I think he's going to be a very big star soon. I have also a signed another film after Ajnabee with Abbas- Mustan. Then I have Gaurang Doshi's Aankh directed by Vipul Shah, Micholi with Amitji, Paresh Rawal, Sushmita Sen and Arjun Rampal. There's also Suneel Darshan's next, Mere Jeevan Saathi with Karisma.

Have Karisma and you sorted out your problems?
What problems? The problem was, we didn't have any problems. People cooked up our differences in their minds.

Have you made a conscious decision to work with new directors like Vipul Shah and Neeraj Vora?
I love working with new directors. They have new ideas which I find very stimulating. When I heard the first few pages of the script of Vipul Shah's film, I was sure I wouldn't do it. But as the script developed, I was hooked. I was being called for my next shot but I told them to hold on. I had to hear it to the end.

Why are you suddenly so adventurous in your selection of roles?
Yeah, I guess Jaanwar started it all. For half the film I was unrecognisable under long hair and a moustache. Right after that I went into Hera Pheri where I didn't even have a leading lady. In Dhadkan Sunil Shetty had the author-backed role. Now again I am different in Khiladi 420 I am completely different. I go into Deepa Mehta's Water in January. There I play a character as different from Khiladi 420 as Bill Clinton from George Bush.

Would you mind doing an out and out villain's role?
I wouldn't mind at all. I am ready to take on any role with meat and substance. Right now all I want to concentrate on is my career. I want no distractions. People can try to pull me down like that crab syndrome. But I'll never divert from my chosen destination. It sometimes hurts and angers me when people talk rubbish about me. I have never said a word against anyone in any of my interviews. So why do people call journalists to spit venom at me?

Akshay Kumar on life after marriage

Image

He's back from a week-long honeymoon in Bali feeling fine. Okay, more than fine. Akshay is feeling on top of the world. Marriage has brought a glow on his face and sunshine to his heart. On the career front, things are looking up and up. And never mind the occasional oops and downs like Khiladi 420. Relaxed and at peace with himself, Akshay talks on life on the rosy side of the road.

Image

How does it feel to be married?
What can I say? Except that I feel complete within myself. Other than that, I can go on and on about being in seventh heaven, going on eight. My problem is that I can't express myself. I would rather feel the emotion than waste time expressing it.

Okay, try.
I like coming home to a wife. I can remember my father leaving home at 9 in the morning and returning at 6 in the evening. He used to look so happy when he came home to his wife and children, or took us to a movie.
I can't believe today I'm climbing the same stairway to heaven. I feel very secure, comforted and happy. I also find myself working better. There's no negativity in my life any more. Everything looks bright and positive. And the fact that Tina has such a wonderful mother only adds to my feeling of being complete.

Image

You've been zipping in and out of the country. Have you had the time to actually feel married?
Yeah, I've been out a lot. But Tina has been with me most of the time. Another thing that makes me feel married is the constant work that's going on in our home. The carpenters are hammering away constantly while my wife keeps instructing them. Ghar ghar jaisa lagta hai.

So you're moving into the new place that you bought?
No, I'm talking about my old place. That's being renovated and newly furnished. For now, we'll all be staying there. I haven't thought about the new place at all.

Both Hrithik and you are blissfully married. Is marriage the new mantra for stardom?
There are no hard and fast rules for such things. Every person should marry when the time is right. For me, the right time was now when I'd found the right person and my career was doing so well.

Image

Where do you think Khiladi 420 went wrong?
Oops, just when we were talking about pleasant things you had to go and spoil it. I'll tell you one thing, I think I gave a decent performance in Khiladi 420. Too bad it didn't do well. I guess I owe my performance to my director, Neeraj Vora. I know the reasons why the film didn't do well. But I don't want to go on record about them. I enjoyed playing the wicked character in Khiladi 420. I wish the film had been publicised better.

Were you disappointed when your performance in Khiladi 420 brought you nearly nil critical acclaim?
Yeah, I was disappointed that my performance wasn't taken seriously. But I was even more unhappy because my stunts in the film were ignored. Tell me, in which other film has there been a stunt like the one where I go atop an airborne plane and that too without the use of trick photography or special effects? I think Khiladi 420 is one of the best action films I've ever done. I think my stunt deserved an award.

How did you react to Sunil Shetty getting an award for Dhadkan?
Sunil was good in Dhadkan. He did a really good job. He deserved the award. As for me, whenever I go anywhere people praise my performance. But maybe it wasn't good enough for an award. I'm also quite happy with my performance with Sunil in Hera Pheri.

Image

Every film-maker comments on how radiant you look nowadays.
That's because I'm completely at peace with myself. My home life and my career are both in order. This year I have three or four promising releases. I think four releases a year is enough. I'm trying to do one project at a time. Suneel Darshan's Ek Rishta: The Bond Of Love was completed in three months.

Why not make it a rule to do just one film at a time?
Because that's not possible over here. If that one film flops, you've had it. It's pack-up time for you. There's a lot of insecurity around here. One doesn't often get a role like the one in Ek Rishta where I got a chance to share camera space with Mr Amitabh Bachchan for the first time. It was a new experience for me to see an actor going through so many rehearsals before the actual take. He does about 25 rehearsals for every scene.

What was it like working with Raakheedi?
It was like going back in time. I did the first-ever shot of my career with her in Saugandh. I still remember how she kissed my forehead for that shot. Even she likes to rehearse a lot. I was amazed to see her on the sets for 12-14 hours every day.
We were all so involved with the film, it felt like all of us--Mr Bachchan, Raakheeji, Juhi Chawla, Mohnish Bahl and I--were actually like one big family. Suneel Darshan is a complete commercial director.
There's a particular rapport that only a father and a son share. That feeling comes out on the screen. I think it has to do with the feelings that Suneel has for his own father. I think somewhere Amitji's own feelings for his father and my feelings for mine added to the film's emotional value. I'm doing another film with Amitji, Gaurang Doshi's All The Best. Funnily enough, my wife is doing a play by that name, though it isn't in any way related to my film.

You went to Dubai to watch Twinkle make her stage debut in Feroz Khan's All The Best. What was the experience like?
I was amazed by her confidence on stage. She has an elephant's memory. That's really important on stage. Her co-stars had already done 300 shows of the play. But she was doing it for the first time. She didn't fumble even once! And she'd only rehearsed for a month.
I was really proud of her. I was so scared that she might forget her lines. Whenever I knew a lengthy piece of dialogue was due, I'd to hide my face in my lap in terror. But it never happened. I would love to do a play when I have the time. In the meanwhile, I'm content with my own All The Best. Now if I can only be half as good in the film as she is in the play.

What's this "All The Best" that you're doing?
Wait and see. It'll surprise you. Besides me, there are also Arjun Ramphal and Paresh Rawal. As for Amitji, since I've already worked with him in Ek Rishta, my comfort level with him is much higher in All The Best. Interestingly, as in Hera Pheri, there's no heroine opposite me here either.

Image

The gossip press will be disappointed.
Who cares about the gossip press? What will they write when Tina and I team up in Vikram Bhatt's film? We go into that later during the year after the release of Ek Rishta. This month I finish shooting for Abbas-Mustan's Ajnabee.

Why has this film taken so long?
That's because Abbas-Mustan are perfectionists. They like to work hard and polish their scripts. Ajnabee is a complicated film.

What's it like working with Kareena?
I'm quite protective about her. I've seen her prancing on the sets as a child. Unlike Karisma who's extremely proper, Kareena is spontaneous before the camera. With her around, anything can happen.

Were there problems between Karisma and you at one point of time?
Tu pagal hai kya? She was my first heroine. We've done nine films in 10 years. Doesn't the press have anything better to do than cook up differences between two professionals? We never had any kind of quarrel, much to the annoyance of the gossip press, I'm sure. We're very comfortable working with each other. We better be. We're doing two more films together (laughs).

And what's it like working with Abhishek Bachchan?
I'm doing Dharmesh Darshan's "Haan Maine Bhi Pyar Kiya" with him. We have a great time. Obviously I can't joke around with Amitji. Everyone is quiet on the sets. With Abhishek, it's different. Both of us freak out on the sets. Yeah we're both bigtime pranksters (laughs). We play cricket on the sets. We get along really well. I've always said Abhishek is the dark horse. He's going to go a long way. We haven't done too many major scenes together as yet. But whatever I've shot with Abhishek has been enjoyable. Like me, he's very disciplined and punctual. One of the things I love about shooting with Abhishek is we can start work bright and early. I don't get that opportunity too often.

How do you explain this sudden splurge of films with Karisma Kapoor?
What splurge? I'm doing just two films with her and I'm enjoying myself. Like me she's a thorough professional.

"I want to have a child..."

Intimately yours: Akshay Kumar
Magazin Gallery --> FILMFARE Oct 2001

It's lunch break on the sets of Gaurang Doshi's Aankhen at Film City. Akshay Kumar and Arjun Rampal are hangin'
loose--swapping SMSs.
Paresh Rawal joins them and freezes at the sight of Tyson and Demi, Rampal's pets. Watching him head for the bathroom,
the abhinetas exchange a wink. Paresh's cautiously steps out when he realises that the dogs are well-behaved and friendly.
Next, everyone heads for Arjun's tiffin. "There's a premium on non-vegetarian food on this set," Akki explains. Apparently the
producer only serves vegetarian fare a la the Barjatyas. "Arjun's wife Mehr sends him terrific chicken curry and rice.
Arjun hates sharing his tiffin with us," jokes Akhsay, poking a face at Rampal.
The party's over: When we retire to the quiet of Akshay's make-up room, the satiated actor says food and marriage are the best
things that can happen to a man.
Affairs de coeure are set aside while we focus on Akki's next release Ajnabee. "Abbas-Mustan were the ones who gave me my
first hit Khiladi," Akki recalls. He's fervently hoping that Ajnabee, which is a murder mystery turns out to be a money-
spinner as well.

Image

"Bobby Deol's a cool dude to work with," he continues. Yup, the actor is looking forward to Abbas-Mustan's next with Deol Jr and
Preity Zinta. Asked if he was the buffer between the warring parties Kareena Kapoor and Bobby Deol, on the sets of Ajnabee, Akhsay
retorts, "I didn't notice any tension. Both of them are too professional to let anything come in the way of their work."
"For heaven's sake please don't ask me whether I'm soft on Bipasha Basu," he hastens to add. "I no longer wear my heart on my sleeve.
My loyalties lie with my wife." Nixing reports that the Mega-Blast shows with Sunil Shetty, Raveena Tandon, Urmila Matondkar and Mahima
Chaudhary were a debacle...Akki discloses, "The collections were above average.
When I packed up and returned home, the girls were still there performing. If it was that bad wouldn't it be pack-up for everyone?"
He fixes me with a nasty look when asked why Raveena Tandon and he shared icy-cold vibes on the Vidroh sets in Hyderabad.
"Most of the time it's people's imagination that's working overtime," says Akshay sarcastically. "Nothing of the sort ever happened.
And this is the last time I'm answering such a silly question."
Akshay KumarAkshay's very kicked about Suneel Darshan's Talaash with Amisha Patel. And Dharmesh Darshan's Haan Maine Bhi Pyar Kiya
with Karisma Kapoor and Abhishek Bachchan.
Enthusiastically he gabs about the terrific response he got for Ek Rishtaa on his recent foreign tour. "Whereever we went, people came forward
to congratulate me. It's funny how you do 50 films in your career and there's just that one film which gets you a warm response. The unanimous
opinion was that Amitji and I looked good together. After we wrap up Aankhen, the two of us have been signed for Mahesh Manjrekar's Kutumbh."
Summarising his 10 years showbiz, the actor emphasises that the one virtue that's kept him in bizness, is his sincerity. "Check out Yeh Dillagi, Janwar,
Hera Pheri and Dhadkan," he says. "I've given them my best shot.

Image

"It'd be stupid of me to brag," he retorts. "There are no awards on my shelf to prove I'm the best. But the very fact that I've been around for 10 years
is good enough. From just being one of India's best action heroes to the nomination for Hera Pheri...I've come a long way. Finally people have
started noticing my performances too."
Quiz him about why he hasn't floated an Akshay.com or an Akshay Corporation like some of his more savvy colleagues and he replies: "Computers give
me a scare. So do ledgers and balance-sheets. I don't have a head for figures(no pun intended)," he laughs. Nor do I have crores salted away to experiment
with. "For the first seven years of my career I worked round the clock," he elaborates. "I'm just about comfortable financially. I
do four films at a time. I've begun to enjoy my work. I could squeeze in more films but then I'll hardly get to see Tina. And that's something I don't want
to compromise on. I'm like a school-kid," he chuckles. "The moment pack-up is announced, I drive home."
Didn't one hear that he planned to start a business with Sunil Shetty? "Nahin yaar...that's really far fetched," he clarifies. "Right now Sunil and I are doing
Awaara Pagal Deewana together...nothing else."
Is he upset that wifey nixed the lead opposite him in Awaara Pagal Deewana? "No," he smiles. "She preferred to allot her dates to All The Best, a play, rather
than do a film with me. How can I influence her?" The smitten patidev cautions that a marriage can only be successful if the husband and wife give each
other space. "I want to have a child," he admits. "Tina wants to wait for a while before she has the baby. Naturally I will go along with what she wants."
Contrary to public belief that he's a MCP, Akshay tells me that he actually admires his biwi's independent spirit. "She's a very capable lady," he beams.
"Whether it's her career or her personal life, she makes her own decisions." He grins like a Cheshire cat when asked about the love-bites on his neck.
"I'm shaadi-shuda so I've nothing to be embarrassed about. Married men have a licence to wear love-bites..." Could he do a quick take on the last eight months
of his married life. Is the honeymoon still on? "Listen," he retorts. "I don't want to go on and on about the marriage issue. Somehow it's extremely important to
keep certain aspects of my relationship with Tina personal. My marriage is not for public consumption."

40 QUESTIONS: Talk on the wild side
Magazin Gallery --> FILMFARE January 2002

1 What's going on in your mind right now?
There are no deep thoughts going on. I'm having my lunch and counting my protein and carbohydrate intake. I'm also condering whether I should eat onions. I have a romantic scene with Sushmita Sen later in the afternoon.

2 Describe what you're wearing.
A checked shirt with grey trousers. I'm also wearing a fat Pinnochio nose and a wig for a scene in Aankhen.

3 What colour is Sunday?
Blue, green and brown. Tina and I have found this haven near Mumbai where the sea is blue, the grass is green and the rocks are brown. It's a beautiful place and we religiously spend our Sunday there.

4 Tell us three unknown facts about yourself.
I'm an introvert, I can keep secrets and I have a sweet tooth.

5 Are you a good liar?
No baba, I'm a hopeless liar. Every time I attempt to fib, I fall hard on my face.

6 Have you ever been caught red-handed?
Yes, while playing Holi. Tina caught me coloured red from head to toe.

7 If you had to make an apology, what would it be and to whom?
To god, seeking his pardon for hurting someone knowingly or unknowingly.

8 Where's the best place to be?
Goa. Whenever we get an opportunity, my wife and I fly out there to chill out. Somehow, it's one place where no one bothers with celebrities.

9 What is the weirdest thing you've put in your mouth?
A big black ant when I was just three years old.

10 What's the weirdest thing you've ever put into your mouth?
My foot. I know I should learn to be more diplomatic but I think it's rather late in the day.

11 Tell us three facts about India.
It's a highly populated nation, there's rampant corruption and its people are god-fearing.

12 What keeps you sailing in a crisis?
My speed boat and my faith in god.

13 Tell us about an item of clothing that shaped your identity.
I'm a casual dresser but T-shirts--whether they're body-hugging, loose or short are my trademark.

14 Which is the most memorable telephone call of your life?
I got a call from one of my close friends saying he was in trouble with the police. Ten minutes later, a cop called to say that if my erring friend came to meet me, I should promptly inform the authorities. I broke into a cold sweat. After another 10 minutes, my friend was again on the line to inform me that he'd played a prank on me. I was relieved and angry. I still haven't been able to get over that phone call.

15 What do you joke about?
I'm only joke about myself because I prefer to laugh at myself than at others.

Image

16 Is god inside or outside us?
It's said that god is everywhere but I truly believe god is inside one's parents. That was Lord Ganesha's ideology too. That's why when he was asked to tour the world... Ganesha just went around his parents Shiv and Parvati.

17 What attracts you in a woman?
It's difficult to pin-point one quality but I find a woman's height interesting, or I could find her sheer presence intoxicating. Beauty is something that turns me on too.

18 Describe the way you wooed your wife.
She loves reading fiction. I got to know this when we were shooting for International Khiladi. When we started seeing each other, I presented her with all the best-selling novels I could find.

19 What is the best thing about being an actor?
My heart rules me.

20 Quote a song lyric that truly means something to you?
Mera dil bhi kitna paagal hai, yeh pyaar jo tumse karta hai, Par saamne tum jab aate ho, kuch bhi kah ne se darta hai.

21 What do you think about facial hair?
On a guy it looks cool like on Amitabh Bachchan on a gal it looks uncool. Actually make that disgusting.

22 What's the cutest thing about you?
My boyish smile.

23 What are you most terrified of being remembered for?
My temper... at times it gets the better of me.

24 Were we made this way or did we become this way?
We're all born innocent... circumstances and destiny define our personality in later years.

25 Which book have you read most often?
I haven't read much in recent years. I made some notes in prison which I keep reading. Someday it'll be part of my autobiography.

26 If you were allowed just one letter, to whom and about what would that letter be?
To dad thanking him for bringing me back from the brink when most people thought I'd remain a druggie all my life. 27 Do angels exist?

27 Do angels exist?
I guess they do. I kissed my angel goodbye some six years ago.

28 If you could change one thing about your own body, what would that be?
Nothing yaar. I made all the changes I had to by working endless hours in the gymnasium after I kicked up the drug habit. I've got a fairly decent physique... and a flat stomach at 42. That's good enough.

29 Talk us through your worst date?
I was getting cosy with this ex-girlfriend of mine when her mother dropped in unexpectedly. Romance flew out of the window immediately.

30 Have you been cheated upon?
I guess, how many times I've lost count.

31 Which Website do you visit often?
msn.com.

32 What's your reaction when you first hear about scams?
Shock.

33 When did you last feel utterly insignificant?
On two occasions: The first time was when I couldn't help my mother who was in acute pain because she had cancer... and the second time was when Richa died. I wasn't much use to her too.

Image

34 Do you have a recurring dream?
I haven't slept well in ages yaar, so there's no dreaming involved.

35 Which is the most memorable moment of your life?
The birth of my daughter Trishala (August 10, 1988).

36 The best meal you've ever had?
The mutton biryani and the paya from my friend Afzal Khan's house is the best in the world.

37 Do you have it within you to kill someone?
I don't think so. When I get mad I can rough a guy up but I won't go beyond that.

38 What's the best way to say goodbye?
Walk out silently. Goodbyes are painful.

39 What's the worst aspect of being an actor?
Grinning at all and sundry on a set when you're actually feeling completely anti-social. Sometimes there's no privacy even when you're changing your clothes or eating your food man.

40 When did you last laugh till you cried?
When I got the stunt-guy Usman to pretend he was drunk and chase this poor unsuspecting hair-dresser all over Ooty. Poor girl she ran for her life. Of course I was the first one who laughed and gave the joke away.

Kingdom come

Forever yours: Akshay Kumar

What's the reaction to Aankhen? been like?
The film is a hit in Mumbai and overseas. It hasn't fared too well in Punjab, CPCI and some other territories. I've received terrific feedback for my performance though. For me, good work started with Tanuja Chandra's Sanghursh. After that movie, film-makers looked beyond my ability to do stunts. Suneel Darshan's Jaanwar established my credentials as an actor. I also got good reviews for my performances in Ek Rishtaa, Dhadkan and Ajnabee.

What went wrong with Haan... Maine Bhi Pyar Kiya?
It failed. All of us... Dharmesh Darshan, Abhishek Bachchan, Karisma Kapoor and I... should take the flak for it. When a film is declared a hit, we're praised. Likewise, when a film fails, we should jointly shoulder the criticism.

Is it true that you have fallen out with Gaurang Doshi, the producer of Aankhen? Industry sources say you refused to attend the film's premiere in Kuala Lumpur.
Please note, there's been no fall-out with Gaurang Doshi. I couldn't attend the Kuala Lumpur premiere because I was shooting with Kareena Kapoor in Dubai for Pahlaj Nihalani's Talaash. It's very difficult to organise a foreign outdoor once the combination dates go haywire.

Did you ask for money?
Money to attend a premiere? Are you crazy? I would if I was performing. I don't charge money to attend premieres of my own films.

Reports say you've refused Gaurang Doshi's next film.
He hasn't even approached me for it. So where's the question of refusing him?

Did you try to manipulate your role in Aankhen? Were any of Arjun Rampal's scenes cut to suit you?
I've never manipulated... and I never will. I did the role Vipul Shah offered me, I wasn't asked to choose. Arjun Rampal is a friend. I won't play dirty with him.

So what's next?
Firoz Nadiadwala's Awaara Paagal Deewana in which I play an underworld don surrounded by bufoons. Can't tell you more. Wait till you see the film.

How are you going to break out of the rut?
Excuse me, I've already re-invented myself. I stopped doing maar-dhaad flicks and moved to performance-oriented flicks. Sanghursh and Janwaar were just the beginning.

Are you in a mood to experiment?
Definitely. I want to play characters with shades of white, grey and black. I don't be content as just a good bowler or a good batsman. The idea is to be a proficient all-rounder.

Is there a sense of insecurity now that you're doing fewer films?
No, not at all. After I complete Talaash and Mere Jeevan Saathi, I may be sitting at home for six to eight months.

God, why?
Simply because I don't want to do run-of-the-mill movies. Earlier, I had to take on everything because I needed the money. Now I'm financially secure. Pehle stardom was an ATM machine which gave me ready cash whenever I was kadka. Now films are a passion. I want to do good work.

You're going to be a father soon. Won't that add to your responsibilities?
I've always been a responsible guy. I'm ready for the role of a parent. No more questions on this subject, puhlease.

If there's one thing you could change about your past, what would it be?
I wish my father was alive. He'd have been happy to see me settled.

What about the future?
What about it? I'll shoot, till they shoot me down. I've sold my soul to the moviewallahs.

ANIMAL APPEAL

On the prowl: Akshay Kumar

Image

Vroom... vroom he zips into a shutterbug's studio on a sleek, sexy, grey `n' red motorbike. He's thrown on a casual green kurta and a pair of beige capris but he looks every bit a movie star. All attention gravitates towards him naturally. It's his designer Anna Singh and hairdresser Dilshad who get their hands on him first, though. While Anna fusses over the white frills of his see-through shirt, Dilshad gels his hair. Lo and behold, the star is ready to face the still camera. Seconds later, Lara Dutta joins him. Together they recreate pure passion, all for a good cause--some unforgettable snapshots. Session wrapped up, he turns his attention to me and says, "Shoot, I'm ready for the sawaal-jawaab session now."

Is it true that you've tried absolute daredevilry in Awaara Paagal Deewana?
Yes, Awaara Pagal Deewana has some mind-boggling action sequences. This is the first time the Indian audience will get to see such fights. Firoz Nadiadwala's hired the same technicians who worked on Keanu Reaves' The Matrix. So quite naturally the action is better than the best. I was absolutely charged while doing the action sequences.

Is it true that you've fought with a bull a la the Spanish matadors?
Yes, while shooting a song sequence in Spain, I took on a bull. It's just a brief interlude but it had me all charged.??????

Is action your only USP?
Well, that was true for me during the Khiladi series. Then I gradually moved to performance-oriented roles. Whether it's Jaanwar, Dhadkan, Ek Rishtaa, Ajnabee or Aankhen one can clearly see that I have crossed over from action to emotion.

Go on...
The main thing that attracted me to Awaara Paagal Deewana was that I'm playing a comic don. So there's plenty of action. And plenty of laughs as well.

Image

Do you think you should be doing such dangerous stunts?
Look, I don't just go out there and try to jump off a cliff. If I have to do some life-threatening stuff, then I ensure that I'm coached to do it correctly. And I think 10 times before I attempt it.

Do your mother or wife warn you against doing such stunts?
My mother and wife know I'm not foolish enough to do something which may endanger my life.

Aren't you sometimes afraid that you may land up in bed with a bad back like Sunny Deol or with a few broken ribs like Shah Rukh Khan?
I don't think of anything negative when I give my shot. As I said earlier, I give it far more thought than the average actor before I try any daredevilry. I'm sure Sunny Deol or Shah Rukh Khan didn't really take chances. But accidents happen to actors just like they happen to the next guy or you.

If you could exchange your body with Sylvester Stallone's, would you?
Why should I? My body is in perfect order. I have perfect pectorals and washboard abs.

A recent survey showed that if a Hindi remake of Spider-Man was made, they'd cast you in Tobey Maguire's role.
What can I say to that? I'm flattered that people identify me with physical fitness and agility. I recently did a commercial for Hercules Cycles and the agency guys said they had zeroed in on me because I'm physically fit.

Image

At 70, what will you do for kicks?
Oh, I'll probably be playing football in my backyard with my son or my grandson. I'm one of those guys who will want physical activity even at 70. It's said that when a monkey grows old, he still does somersaults. It's the same with me. I'm a fitness freak and will always remain a man of action.

Do you sometimes wish you could be an actor and yet not be famous?
That's not possible -- at least here in India. Film actors are household names. We can't escape fame.

Actors complain that they have to pay a very high price for fame. Do you agree?
The guys who are saying this are liars. We actors are a privileged lot. We get a lot more out of life than we give. I travel first class, I have a good car, a good home and a great lifestyle. Fanfare, adulation, good-will, money... honestly there's just no cause for me to complain.

Does people's curiosity about your personal life surprise you?
No, I think it's natural for the public to speculate about a celebrity's life. I'm okay with it, so long as they don't cross the line. I don't mind entertaining the media in my drawing room, but they are most certainly not welcome in my bedroom.

What according to you is your greatest achievement?
My achievement is the fact that I enjoy such terrific goodwill. Almost all my producers, be it Suneil Darshan, Dharmesh Darshan, Guddu Dhanoa, Umesh Mehra or Abbas-Mustan have repeated me in their films. This happens only because I've been very disciplined and well-behaved on the sets.

Who has left a big impression on you lately?
I haven't met any such person. The only person who made an impression on me was my father.

Were you very protective about your sister while growing up?
Yes, I was. Why only my sister, I'm protective about all women. The fairer sex should be protected.

Do you believe that a woman's place is at home?
Hello, I'm not a male chauvinist, if that's what you're driving at. My wife is a working woman. If I felt a woman's place was at home, my wife would be sitting there, right?

If you could invite four people to dinner tonight, who would they be?
Bobby Deol, his wife Tani, Twinkle and Akshay Kumar.

Let's discuss Lara Dutta, your co-star for the day.
Lara Dutta is the right mix of Western and Indian influences. Like so many other models, she's not anorexic; nor is she too plump. She's got a great smile, speaks good Hindi and has a Miss Universe title to her credit.

Do your fans send you weird mail or make obscene demands of you?
No, I'm a married man so I don't even get marriage proposals any more. As for fans making demands, it happens mostly during the shows abroad where the girls ask for a hug or a kiss on the cheek.

Do you oblige?
Yeah, what's wrong with a warm hug or a kiss on the cheek. It's purely innocent.
